2026 Program & Creative Team

We are just beginning to develop a version of Eco-Theater Club at the northern end of the Hudson River estuary, in Albany, NY, which would run in tandem with our program at the New York Harbor School on Governors Island. Imagine students at opposite ends of the estuary learning from each other about their respective homes, visiting each others’ schools and witnessing each others’ performances!

What is the Eco-Theater Program?

Our Eco-Theater Program is an after-school program for public school students. The program uplifts the imaginations of young people at the frontlines of climate and environmental justice and brings their ideas to life on stage. The program aims to inspire students to become environmental justice leaders and advocates for their communities using the power of their creative voices.

In the program, students learn about local issues of climate and environmental justice from guest presenters and field trips. Inspired by what they learn, students collaborate with adult artists to write a one-act play with music. Students also learn about theatrical design, bringing their scripts and characters to life. The students’ work is then performed for audiences of their peers, teachers, family members, and the larger community.

The current iteration of the Eco-Theater Program takes place at the NY Harbor School on Governors Island.

2026-2027 Harbor School Program

Our 2026-2027 Eco-Theater Program takes place at LMCC Arts Center and the New York Harbor School on Governors Island. Join us in April 2027 to see the student artists' work! More details to follow.

Program expansion

Program history

The Eco-Theater Program, formerly named Big Green Theater (BGT), was initially conceived by Bushwick Starr founders Noel Allain and Sue Kessler. The program was developed and run in partnership with Jem Pickard and Future River (formerly Superhero Clubhouse) from 2010-2020. The Bushwick Starr is continuing to run BGT in North Brooklyn, while Future River runs the program elsewhere.
